Drive Review

How can I sum up this movie in one word? well the first thing that comes to mind is… Slow. "What?! How can a movie titled "Drive" be slow?" you may be asking. I wondered the exact same thing. Now don't get me wrong, there were small glimpses of fast paced car chase scenes and even a few startling and gruesome moments but they were easily overcome by the countless awkward silences peppered throughout the movie and even more strangely, long awkward silences. Maybe they were there to add some dramatic effect but I think it was poorly executed. It wasn't all bad though. I really enjoyed the opening scene where "Driver" shows off his abilities as a driver and another car chase after a robbery went awry. All in all, this movie wasn't awful, but it wasn't great either.

Driver (Ryan Gosling) is a stunt driver by day and a wheelman by night. Driver's mentor/manager, Shannon (Bryan Cranston) knows how talented a driver he is and gets him gigs with movies and with people in need of a getaway driver. Shannon's next venture for the Driver is to put him behind the wheel of a stock car, but there's a problem. He doesn't have the funds to get the wheels turning, so he asks for help from Bernie (Albert Brooks) and Nino (Ron Perlman),  the only guys he knows with the money to support him. These guys aren't the most upstanding individuals in the world. then "driver" develops an interest for his married neighbor Irene (Carey Mulligan) and her son Benicio. As this relationship develops he finds out that she is married to a man named Stan (Oscar Isaac) and that he is coming home from prison.

Once Stan is released, Driver finds out that he is in some trouble and owes money to some "not so nice" individuals for providing protection in jail. Since the Driver likes Irene so much he offers his help to get him out of trouble, but the job goes horribly wrong and Driver ends up caught in the middle of a deadly battle and a large amount of money. All driver wants to do after the Botched job is set things right. He's the only one that feels that way... After some Gory scenes the movie ends with a meeting of Driver and the man who wants the money. All I'll say is that it ends with an awkward silence…

"Drive" is billed as an Action Crime Drama and I think it delivers on all of those fronts. It has a little action provided by the 2 and a half Car Chases, it has some drama with Driver and Irene's sorta love connection and there is definitely some crime. But don't go into this movie expecting to be on the edge of your seat and biting your fingernails off to see what happens next. It's somewhat cliché and very predictable.

Drive is Rated R for strong brutal bloody violence, language and some nudity. There are a few scenes where you see someone get splattered by a shotgun in a hotel room, As skull gets obliterated by a boot, a man is beaten with a hammer and some cutting and stabbing with some gushing of blood. The language is definitely noticeable and explicit, and I guess it wouldn't be a crime thriller if one of the thug's hideouts wasn't a strip joint, so yeah there are some topless ladies too.

My recommendation for this movie is to rent it, but if you really like a car chase or two and thousands of awkward silences then you should probably see it sooner than later.
