Donna Stern (Jenny Slate) is an aspiring stand-up comedian doing free gigs in a performance space at the back of a bar.  Her roommate Nellie (Gaby Hoffman) and her friend who runs the comedy show, Joey (Gabe Liedman), are a great deal of support for Donna and she really needs them now:  Her boyfriend Ryan (Paul Briganti) ends their relationship by telling her he’s seeing one of her friends behind her back and the used bookstore where she works has lost its lease and is closing in six weeks, soon to leave her unemployed.

The world’s economy has collapsed and a can of food is worth killing for in the Australian outback.  Eric (Guy Pearce) is sitting in a bar having a drink when a small truck rolls over on the street and lands on its wheels but stuck on the side of the road.  Inside are Henry, Archie and Caleb (Scoot McNairy, David Fields and Tawanda Manyimo), three thieves who have just pulled off a violent robbery.  Henry has been shot in the leg and had been arguing with Archie in the truck about leaving Henry’s injured, and possibly dead, brother behind at the scene.

Albert Stark (Seth MacFarlane) is a sheep herder in Old Stump, Arizona in 1882 and he hates it.  Not only is he tired of smelling like sheep, he despises everything about his way of life:  He could get killed by a rattlesnake walking to his outhouse.  He could catch any one of several fatal diseases prevalent at the time.  He could look sideways at the wrong man and be killed on the street, plus innumerable other ways to die.

In a bleak future, the Earth is devastated by a war between sentient, shape-shifting robots called Sentinels and practically the entire human race.  Designed in the 1970’s by Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage), the Sentinels were supposed to identify and hunt mutants in the belief those with unique abilities were a threat to humanity.  When Trask was killed by the mutant Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), she was captured and her shape-shifting abilities were reverse-engineered into the Sentinels, making them adaptable to any mutant and nearly unstoppable.
