Major William Cage (Tom Cruise) is a public relations officer with the US Army Reserves.  He appears on TV news shows to discuss the recent victory at Verdun against the Mimics, an alien life form that arrived on Earth five years earlier and began taking over Europe.  The win at Verdun is about the only good news in the Mimic war.  Leading the way in that battle was a soldier named Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt).  The NATO militaries combined to form the United Defense Forces (UDF) led by General Brigham (Brendan Gleeson).

Albert Stark (Seth MacFarlane) is a sheep herder in Old Stump, Arizona in 1882 and he hates it.  Not only is he tired of smelling like sheep, he despises everything about his way of life:  He could get killed by a rattlesnake walking to his outhouse.  He could catch any one of several fatal diseases prevalent at the time.  He could look sideways at the wrong man and be killed on the street, plus innumerable other ways to die.

In a bleak future, the Earth is devastated by a war between sentient, shape-shifting robots called Sentinels and practically the entire human race.  Designed in the 1970’s by Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage), the Sentinels were supposed to identify and hunt mutants in the belief those with unique abilities were a threat to humanity.  When Trask was killed by the mutant Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), she was captured and her shape-shifting abilities were reverse-engineered into the Sentinels, making them adaptable to any mutant and nearly unstoppable.

Steve Rogers, A.K.A Captain America (Chris Evans), is still trying to come to terms with being a man 70 years out of his time.  He thought throwing himself into his work with S.H.I.E.L.D. would give him a feeling of belonging and purpose but that has so far eluded him.  During one mission to free some S.H.I.E.L.D. agents held hostage by pirates on a mobile satellite launching ship, Natasha Romanoff, A.K.A. Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), violates Rogers’ orders and is found in a control room, downloading information onto a flash drive.
