The Earth is a mess in the late 21st century.  It’s severely overpopulated, polluted and nearly out of natural resources.  All the wealthiest people have pooled their resources together to leave the planet to the poor and sick and live a life of luxury on a massive space station called Elysium.  Built by the Armadyne Corporation, Elysium is overseen by a government elected by the residents.  The person in charge of maintaining station security is Secretary Jessica Delacourt (Jodie Foster).

Smurfette (voiced by Katy Perry) is approaching her birthday.  As always happens, she is having nightmares about betraying the Smurfs to the evil wizard Gargamel (Hank Azaria).  Gargamel created Smurfette as one of his little creatures called Naughties.  Papa Smurf (voiced by Jonathon Winters) concocted a secret formula to change her into a full-fledged Smurf.  The other Smurfs are planning a surprise birthday party for Smurfette but are acting as if they’ve forgotten her special day.

 Logan (Hugh Jackman) is living in the Canadian wilderness, drinking heavily and trying to deal with his killing of Jean Grey (Famke Janssen).  Jean often visits Logan in his dreams which turn into nightmares as he kills her over and over again.  While in a nearby town at a local bar, Logan is approached by Yukio (Rila Fukushima) on behalf of her employer, Ichiro Yashida (Haruhiko Yamanouchi).  Logan saved Yashida’s life at a prisoner of war camp near Nagasaki in World War II when the atomic bomb was dropped.

Frank Moses and Sarah Ross (Bruce Willis and Mary-Louise Parker) are living a life of suburban, domestic bliss.  He loves it but she is a little bored after being introduced to the exciting world of international intrigue.  Marvin Boggs (John Malkovich) finds the pair in a Costco and warns Frank of trouble coming.  Frank blows him off but watches in the parking lot as Marvin’s car explodes with Marvin in it.

In the near future, giant monsters from another universe are coming to wreak havoc on Earth through a trans-dimensional portal on the floor of the Pacific Ocean.  At first, conventional military weapons are able to defeat the monsters, called Kaiju, but more creatures, larger and better adapted to take damage come through the portal and soon millions of people around the world are dead.  The governments of the world unite to fight the Kaiju and develop massive humanoid robots called Jaegers.

John Reid (Armie Hammer) is on a train returning to Colby, Texas in 1869.  Reid is the new district attorney for the territory that includes his home town of Colby.  Also in town is his brother Dan (James Badge Dale), Dan’s wife Rebecca (Ruth Wilson) and their young son.  Also on the train is dangerous outlaw Butch Cavendish (William Fichtner) who is being transported in chains to Colby to be hanged.  Chained with Cavendish is a Comanche Indian named Tonto (Johnny Depp).

In the years following an economic collapse, a group known as the New Founding Fathers of America has been able to turn things around.  The economy is booming, the unemployment rate is less than one percent and crime is extremely low.  In order to maintain the hard work and goodwill of the people, the New Founding Fathers have established the Purge.  Once a year for 12 hours all crime is legal, including murder.  Only the highest ranking government officials are exempt from the Purge which is used to allow the people to vent all their rage and negative feelings.

Four magicians of varying fame, Daniel Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg), Merritt McKinney (Woody Harrelson), Henley Reeves (Isla Fisher) and Jack Wilder (Dave Franco) are each given a Tarot card with an apartment’s address in New York City.  As they each arrive and introduce themselves, there is a noticeable tension between Daniel and Henley as she used to be his assistant before she struck out on her own.
