John McClane (Bruce Willis) must travel to Russia and see if he can provide his son Jack (Jai Courtney) any assistance as Jack is facing murder charges.  When John arrives at the courthouse in Moscow he notices some things don’t look right.  About then, three powerful car bombs explode, blowing out a side of the building.  Jack and another prisoner named Komarov (Sebastian Koch) escape into the streets just as several armed men enter the devastated courtroom.

Sandy Patterson (Jason Bateman) works in middle management in a financial services company.  He and his wife Trish (Amanda Peet) have two young daughters with another baby on the way and they are just getting by financially.  Sandy is very good at his job but the economy has prevented his company from handing out annual bonuses as they did in the past.  Sandy is called into the office of his boss Harold Cornish (Jon Favreau) where he’s told to prepare bonus checks for a select few of the company’s upper management, including Cornish.

Jimmy Bobo (Sylvester Stallone) is a career criminal who specializes in being a problem solver for various crime syndicates.  He and his partner Louis Blanchard (Jon Seda) track down and eliminate the enemies of their bosses.  After one job, the pair goes to meet their contact at a New Orleans area bar to get paid.  While waiting, Jimmy goes the restroom while Louis drinks at the bar.  Louis is approached by Keegan (Jason Momoa) who quickly and efficiently stabs Louis to death without anyone noticing.

Two young children, a brother and sister, are left in the woods by their father.  They are frightened and don’t understand why their parents would abandon them.  They begin walking through the forest and discover a cabin made entirely of candy.  Both children sample the delicious building supplies and think nothing of entering when the cabin doors open by itself.  Once inside they are attacked and captured by an evil witch who plans on throwing them in an oven and eating them.  The resourceful pair turns the tables on the old hag and throws her into the fire.

Sheriff Ray Owens (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is a former Los Angeles undercover narcotics officer who decided to leave the big city behind after an operation went bad and led to the deaths of several fellow officers.  Owens is now the sheriff of Summerton, a small town near the Mexican border where not much happens except the occasional drunk and disorderly arrest like that of Frank Martinez (Rodrigo Santoro) who happens to be the ex-boyfriend of Sheriff Owens deputy Sarah Torrance (Jaimie Alexander).

Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) is consolidating his power on the West Coast in the city of Los Angeles.  Cohen is a mobster who sees the city as his destiny and the beginning of a new era in crime.  Cohen and his men are willing to go to any violent extreme to ensure their power stays intact.  It also means his underlings have no room for error or they could be killed on the spot.  Los Angeles Police Chief Bill Parker (Nick Nolte) wants to clean up the city but has his hands tied by corrupt judges and dirty cops, both on Cohen’s payroll.

Steve Butler (Matt Damon) is very good at his job; so good, he’s being considered for a major promotion.  He works for a Global Energy, large energy company, and his job is to gain the trust of landowners and get their signatures on lease agreements so his employer can drill for natural gas on their land.

Part of a group of five slaves being forced to march barefoot through a forest in winter, Django (Jamie Foxx) is unexpectedly rescued by a German dentist name King Schultz (Christoph Waltz).  Schultz no longer practices dentistry and has taken up a more lucrative and dangerous profession:  Bounty hunter.  Schultz has tracked down Django specifically because he has seen three particularly despicable outlaws called the Brittle Brothers.  Schultz has no idea what they look like but Django does.

Pete and Debbie (Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann) have birthdays that fall in the same week.  Both are about to turn 40 but Debbie refuses to acknowledge she’s entering middle age and insists she’s only 38.  The couple has two kids, 13-year old Sadie (Maude Apatow) and eight-year old Charlotte (Iris Apatow) who’s constant bickering, and Sadie’s entering puberty, adds stress to a marriage that has plenty of pressure from other factors.  First, Pete’s dad Larry (Albert Brooks) has been borrowing money from Pete for quite some time.

Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) enjoys his life amongst the other Hobbits in the Shire.  That quiet, comfortable existence is upended by the wizard Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen) who wants Bilbo to go on an adventure.  Bilbo refuses and thinks that’s the end of it; but he’s very wrong.  Thirteen dwarves show up at his door offering their service and asking for food.
